It's ok...really. After this weekend, I hate myself. Well...ok, maybe that's
extreme but let me break it down for you. We hit the road Wednesday night and
got to the cabin pretty late so we crashed right away.
The next morning we stopped at the Sunrise Cafe for some breakfast and headed
for the Kasilof river which was about an hour away. All geared up in our chest
waders and got in the river. Now let me stop for just a minute for a side
bar...Chest waders are not pretty. There is nothing flattering about them,
period. I felt like a tank. Is it terrible of me to say that I was secretly
hoping that some really huge, obese people would come next to us to make me
feel small and cute in my waders??? Ok, maybe it is unfair...but it's what I
was hoping for. Moving forward, we fished for about 6 hours and I am pleased to
say that I caught two and Rich caught one. Oh, and that third one was mine that
slipped out of my net so he really caught MY fish by default. As we were
cleaning up and getting ready to leave, we reach over to grab our nets which we
placed just next to the truck, this lady is standing right on our nets!! The
lady up top with the red shorts...yeah, really!??! I guess my horrible hope
from early did come true..just not like I was hoping.
That night, we went to Homer. I LOVE HOMER. It's the cutest town in Alaska in
my opinion. We went and had pizza for dinner and found a nice little camping
spot on the beach. The next day we woke up, went to this wonderful invention of
a place called the "Washboard". This place is ingenious..Basically after
getting muddy, dirty, fishy, and what ever else..you get to go here and pay $5
for a shower room all to yourself. You can take as long as you want and when
you feel that grimy, walking out of that place is like walking out of a day
spa.
We headed back to the river for another day of dip netting. This time we caught
5 fish. That night we went to some friends house who live there and had a glass
of wine and enjoyed the view from their amazing home. Later, we found this
amazing spot deep in the woods where there was nobody. It was peaceful and
perfect when you have been combat fishing all day. The next morning we went and
had breakfast at my favorite little joint called the "Duncan House". We went to
the beach after that and just walked for about an hour before we hit the road
for home. On our way home, we stopped at this little tiny spot that very few
people know about. It's an old campground that is no longer manned by the state
so nobody goes there and the road is so small you would not even know it was
there if you didn't know about this place already. There is only three camping
spots there but it is the perfect slice of heaven. We vegged out there for
about two hours. I plopped my chair in the water and sat and soaked up sun
while Rich cleaned and cut up the fish. When we got back into town that night,
we had fresh salmon for dinner and it was the perfect end to the most
incredible trip.
