I found my little slice of heaven...well, other than chocolate, vacations on
the beach, and the smell of dryer sheets.
Homer is the cutest little town you ever did see. This last weekend was
incredible. We hit the road Friday night and made it half way where Rich's
sister has a cabin. They call it the "Crapin" or the "Cabin of Doors". The
reason they call it that is because it was built in the 70's and it is made up
of all doors. It's hilarious but you know those little podunk places are always
the coziest. So we get there and there is like three feet of unplowed snow just
to get to the crapin. We finally get all set up and then had a BBQ and a cozy
fire in the wood stove. I got to try out my new zero bag and I have to say...it
rocks. The next morning we headed for Homer. Got there and played on the beach,
went to the cutest little bakery called Two Sisters, and played more on the
beach. It was Winter King Derby and we were supposed to get on a boat to fish
but that didn't work out. No biggie, we went to the afterparty where they bring
all the fish in to be weighed for the contest and they serve free beer battered
halibut and clam chowder..it was the bomb diggity! So if you watch that show
"The deadliest Catch" at all you know what the Time Bandit is. It's one of the
boats on the show and I LOVE that show. Well the Time Bandit's home port is
Homer and guess who was in town?? OH YEAH..saw the guys at the Salty Dog Saloon
and then got pictures of the ship. I was doing the riverdance in excitement
while Rich and his sister thought I was insane and slightly off my rocker. I
didn't care...it was so exciting to me and let's face it...it IS afterall, all
about ME.
So, then there are eagles everywhere! You can count 10 in 5 seconds just out
any door. You can see how close I got in the pictures, they are pretty used to
people. It was absolutely surreal to be that close to them, they are such
amazing creatures.
That night we camped out in Rich's truck with our zero bags on the beach. We
had the whole beach to ourselves where seals, otters, and eagle surrounded us.
We had a campfire and it was so amazing, I am actually jealous of myself
telling you about it. The next morning we woke up and hit the "Washboard". It's
a laundry mat that has EVERYTHING. Showers, coffee stand, washers and dryers,
you name it! When you spend the weekend in Homer fishing, camping, clamming, or
whatever..the Washboard showers are nothing less than incredible. You walk out
of there feeling like you just spent the day at a salon getting facials, hair
done, and body massages. It was just the most wonderful trip and I can't wait
to go back for our clamming trip next month!
