Yes, you heard it...Frostbite. This weekend some friends and I headed north to
Fairbanks and the great Chena Hot Springs as mentioned in a blog last month.
Only this time it was -35 outside. No biggie, I came prepared..or so I thought.
I packed up all my snow gear, borrowed some boots from Karen, scarves, hats,
gloves...but who thinks to bring flip flops when heading to -35 degree weather?
Now I have to admit that there may not be anyone on this green earth that loves
flip flops more than Trudy Baydo, but I can't even imagine why I would need
them there. See, there is this pathway from the building to the rock pool
outside. That pathway is about 50 feet long...OUTSIDE. I think, no biggie, I'll
be swift and hop right in! Oh no, I made it about 17.5 feet before tears were
welling up and I was convinced it was FIRE I was walking on. I threw my towel
down on the salt and ice covered cement and stepped on it only to shiver and
cry like a 3 year old saying "I can't make it...FREAK!" I stand there half way
from the building and half way from the pool shaking and my mind is quickly
trying to figure out a solution with no success. I finally decide to gun it to
the pool, crying the whole way. The best part is that when I finally get there,
I slip and almost crack my face open on the rock just to have my feet burning
from going -35 to 110 degrees. One word...P-A-I-N. Anyway, it was an awesome
trip with lots of fun and laughs. I will say that later that night when I went
back I did get smart and decided to wear my snow boots out there. Can you
imagine me in my swimsuit and just snow boots? I didn't care...I really didn't.
So today, I have a Dr. appointment and I notice the bottom of my feet hurt
really bad and they have red spots all over...low and behold..I have FROSTBITE
on the bottom of my foot!! Only one..and it's mild but STILL. Gallon of Aloe,
Costco size Ibrubrofen, good to go...
